Single Use Plastic Ban

Canada’s minister of environment and climate change announced the following regulations around single use plastic ban, which include;

  1. checkout bags;
  2. cutlery;
  3. foodservice ware made from or containing problematic plastics that are hard to recycle;
  4. ring carriers;
  5. stir sticks; and
  6. straws (with some exceptions).

Manufacturing and import of these harmful single-use plastics will come to an end effective December 2022. Businesses have until December 2023 to transition and exhaust their current supplies when sales of these items will be prohibited.

A foreseeable problem the industry will face is the increase in demand for a more sustainable replacement option,  which will cause rise in cost and supply shortages. In order to better prepare and plan for the rollout of this policy, it is imperative for businesses to begin their search for eco friendly and compostable packaging suppliers that meet their needs.

Environmentally friendly, disposable, recyclable tableware. Paper food boxes, plates and Cutlery of cornstarch on a green grass background .

There are many Canadian and  international sustainable packaging companies that work on creating a better world through their products.

  1. Greenovation
    They use 100% natural, biodegradable and compostable naturally fallen leaves of the Areca Palm Tree.
  2. On Green Go
    Their 100% bio compostable and non-toxic products are made from sugar cane fiber, corn and wheat straw.
  3. World Centric
    Their No Tree ® product line does not involve cutting down trees and uses petroleum plastic linings.

Butterfly cup has gained popularity since many fast food chains began offering them as an alternative to cups and lids. This innovative design eliminates plastic lids and straws, contributing to reduced waste disposal volume and cost. It also benefits the consumer sides, as it causes no splashes, leaks or drips.

If the Butterfly cup is not what you are looking for, and your restaurant still prefer to serve drinks in cups and lids, a Canadian company Back to Earth has innovated a compostable straw that looks and performs like plastic. This straw is made from wood and vinegar and it does not get soggy in liquid like conventional paper straws.

Restaurants Canada has published a document that provides a checklist of best practices for building a strategy that’s right for every restaurant.
